College of the Redwoods Cap and Gown Program
Welcome to College of the Redwoods Athletics. We in the athletic department want each of you to have the opportunity to have a significant life experience while you are here at College of the Redwoods.
We believe that in order for that to happen, we must provide you with more than just an athletic experience. We believe that we have a responsibility and an obligation to help prepare you for your future beyond athletics as you move forward in your lives. Given this, our commitment to you is to encourage and support your academic development as well as your athletic development.
Our Cap and Gown Program is intended to make sure our words are not hollow. Your coaches will be spending almost as much time with you in the classroom as on the practice field. We will expect you to supply the grit to succeed academically and we will supply the support necessary for that success.
This program will provide you some important tools needed in order to experience academic success. It will also provide your coaches the opportunity to work closely with you towards that goal and to intervene if a problem arises before it becomes a crisis. Every coach knows the sadness of seeing an athlete having to accept that they are no longer eligible to play and that their athletic career may be over before it needed to be.
We in the athletic department want you to leave College of the Redwoods with a sense of pride in your accomplishments, both individually and collectively. As such, we have set an athletic department-wide goal of achieving a 3.0 GPA. This means that all athletic teams will join together to become one academic team. It does not mean that every athlete must get a 3.0 GPA. What it does mean is that we will expect each of you to do everything you can do to support this team effort as best you can in order to help us reach our collective goal. Even if you do not think you can get a 3.0 GPA, every athlete is capable of attending all of their classes and completing all of their assignments.
